Chapter 4
Commit and Grow Rich
T he Fearless Leaders knows what she wants (Clarity), finds ways to get what she wants, even when it seems impossible (Creativity), and has decided that she is going to make it happen, no matter what (Commitment).
Commitment is what makes you unstoppable. When you have a revenue target that you decide you are going to hit, you don’t stop if you fall short. You just keep going. To quote Vishen Lakhiani in his book, The Code Of The Extraordinary Mind you become “unfuckwithable”.
My client Jennifer, who works with municipalities helping them with group buying contracts, had been working on landing a deal with a municipality for over a year. She would phone every single week and stop by the city hall at least once per month. After four rejected presentations, she was finally given the opportunity to submit a proposal, and it was accepted. After she got the deal, she asked one of the council members why they finally changed their minds, and he told her, “We figured if you were this committed to our contract, then you’ll be as committed in everything you do for us.” Persistence pays off.
Another of my clients, Ashley, has a strict rule to not work on the weekends, because she is committed to family time. She doesn’t attend events, she doesn’t take client calls, and she doesn’t work on her business on the weekend. If she ever makes a conscious exception, she increases her family time during the week.
When there isn’t a commitment, your results suffer. One all-too-common lack of commitment is not being committed to taking care of your health with the proper diet, sleep, exercise, and self-care. When the client’s needs come before your needs, your health suffers and ultimately deteriorates. I know personally from gaining weight and losing sleep as I built my business, that the only solution is to get committed and stay committed.
A lack of commitment to ongoing sales activity means that when business is good, you stop reaching out to prospects, and then your sales pipeline dries up. A commitment to ongoing sales activity means a healthy flow of new business. Get specific about what the commitment is; otherwise your results will suffer.
Commitment creates clear boundaries of when to say “yes” or “no”, which ultimately gives you the freedom to do what you want without feeling obligated to please others. Without commitment, you fall into the trap of reacting to other people’s demands and putting your own goals on the back burner.
It’s time to make a decision. Decide to commit. Without commitment, you are doomed to wander aimlessly, and suffer from Shiny Object Syndrome. You may feel that committing to one path steals away your freedom, but in fact, it is the exact opposite. When you know what you want and you decide you are going after it, everything non-essential falls away, and you reclaim enormous amounts of energy and focus to pursue only that which is fully aligned to your mission.
If you’ve made it this far, that tells me you are committed to understanding this process.
